Scenario briefing
Key teaching points
- Identify the marina's working channel from the pilotage information before transmitting.
- Open on the marina's working channel (commonly 9, 16, 80) — NOT Channel 16, unless the marina specifies otherwise.
- State vessel name, ETA, length, draft, and request for a berth.
- Marinas may not be monitoring Channel 16 — always use the working channel from the pilotage information.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Calling on Channel 16 when the marina has a published working channel.
- Skipping vessel details (length, draft, ETA) and asking the marina to interrogate.
Why it matters
Marina calls are a sub-category of routine VHF — marinas are commercial stations with specific working channels published in the pilotage guide. The call format is the same as any routine call, but skippers routinely fluff it by going off-script on Channel 16 instead of switching.
Exam relevance
Marina call format is examined in the VHF SRC oral and in RYA Yachtmaster Coastal — examiners test the working-channel-selection step.
