Scenario briefing
Key teaching points
- Channel 16: "SÉCURITÉ SÉCURITÉ SÉCURITÉ, ALL STATIONS × 3, THIS IS [station name × 3]".
- Announce the safety message and switch to a working channel (typically 67, 73 or 82 depending on region) for the body of the message.
- End the message with "OUT" — no response is expected.
- SÉCURITÉ takes priority over routine traffic but yields to MAYDAY and PAN-PAN.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Pronouncing "say-cure-it-tay" — the correct pronunciation is the French "say-cure-ee-tay".
- Treating SÉCURITÉ as a distress call — it is information, not assistance.
Why it matters
A SÉCURITÉ safety call broadcasts a navigational or weather warning to all vessels. It is the format used by coastguards for gale warnings, ice reports and SAR exercises, and recreational skippers are expected to recognise it and act on the content.
Exam relevance
SÉCURITÉ is one of the four ITU procedures examined in the VHF SRC oral; candidates must recognise the call and respond appropriately.
