Scenario briefing
Key teaching points
- On Channel 16, reply: "[calling station × 1], THIS IS [your station × 1], OVER".
- Once communication is established, agree a working channel.
- Conduct conversation on the working channel; close with "OUT" when no reply is expected.
- Return to Channel 16 watch after the call.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Repeating the station identifier three times on reply — once is enough for the acknowledgement.
- Using "OVER AND OUT" — the two terms have different meanings (OVER = expect reply; OUT = no reply expected). They are never combined.
Why it matters
Receiving a routine call is half the radio drill — and the half most candidates under-practice. The reply format, the working-channel agreement and the closing "OUT" are all tested in the SRC oral.
Exam relevance
Receiving routine calls is examined in the VHF SRC oral — candidates must execute both halves of the conversation (calling and receiving).
